AI Act Article 4: what the AI literacy duty means for your business

Since 2 February 2025, every company that uses AI must ensure its staff have a sufficient level of AI literacy. Here is what that means in practice.

What does Article 4 say?

Article 4 of the EU AI regulation asks providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures to ensure, to their best extent, a sufficient level of AI literacy among their staff.

It takes into account people’s technical knowledge, experience and training, as well as the context of use.

Who is affected?

Any organisation that uses an AI system professionally: an SME drafting emails with a chat assistant is covered just like a large group.

What should you do?

  • List the AI tools used in the company.
  • Train people according to their role and the risks of their uses.
  • Keep a record of the training completed and the internal rules adopted.
